Contact Lens - A way of correcting myopia and hyperopia, or other refractive error of the eyesight, which consists of curved plastic lenses placed in front of the iris. They’re designed so that they retain good contact with the eye’s surface and remain in place.

Laser Assisted Epithelium Keratomileusis - The acronym for LASEK, a variation on LASIK used when the cornea is too flat or too thin for standard LASIK. Instead of using a microkeratome, it uses an instrument known as a trephine, with a finer blade, to make the corneal flap, and then the eye is soaked for a half-minute or so with an alcohol solution. This softens the epithelium so that it can be folded back more safely.

Ciliary Body - Part of the eye which is in front of the lens, and behind the iris and cornea. It consists of (a) the ciliary muscle which controls the shape of the lens, making it flatter for far distant objects and more convex for closer things; and (b) the ciliary processes, tiny projects which secrete aqueous humor.( DALLAS LASIK - Dr William A. Lower Order Aberrations - The name for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. These are the conditions measured to determine a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, and that can be corrected with refractive eye surgery such as LASIK. The higher order aberrations are more numerous and still be researched and some examples are: halos, glare, and double vision.

Granular Dystrophy - A hereditary eye condition where pale gray granules appear in the stromal layer of the cornea, like little crumbs. It’s usually detected by the time a person is about 20. By age 40 or so, vision will be increasingly impaired as those granules, or lesions, expand, increase in number, coalesce, and penetrate more deeply into the stroma. It can be treated in earlier stages with an excimer laser, or in other ways that remove the granules, and later on by a corneal transplant.( DR BOOTHE - LASIK EYE)

LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe = Artificial tear drop: Lubricants (also called artificial tears) are synthetic (manmade), water-based solutions that are used to lubricate the eye and thicken tears. Artificial tears are formulated as solutions or suspensions, varying in viscosity. Popular examples of artificial tears include AquaSite, Bion Tears, Celluvisc, Duratears, Gen Teal, HypoTears, Liquifilm Tears, OcuCoat, Refresh, Systane, Tears Naturale, and TheraTears. Many people develop sensitivity to the preservatives in these solutions, causing increasing redness, burning or itching. Most of these products are also available in a preservative-free (PF) form. Artificial tears usually are used two to five times a day as needed for relief of symptoms.

Multiple symptoms of dry eyes are persistent throughout the extensive causes. Old age and extreme computer use all can result in various similar symptoms. Discomfort in the eyes which can range from a light pain to a grainy, scratchy feeling in the eyes are all possible. The eyes may also become itchy, red, or tears may start to flood the eyes. Excessive tears are not necessarily good as it can mean the eyes are trying to over compensate a lack of tear production and can represent dry eyes. People with dry eyes will generally experience strain when using the eyes on focusing tasks like watching the tv, knitting, and other activities.

The inner sides of the eyelids, which touch the front surface of surface of the eye, are covered by a thin membrane (the palpebral conjunctiva) that produces mucus to lubricate the eye. This thin membrane folds back on itself and covers the visible sclera of the eyeball. (This continuation of the palpebral conjunctiva is called the bulbar conjunctiva.) Natural oil for the tears is produced by tiny glands located at the edges of the eyelids, providing additional lubrication for the eye. The main component of tears are formed by the lacrimal gland located under the upper lid at the outer corner of the eye. The tears are composed of a combination of the substances produced by the lacrimal gland, the oil glands, and the mucus glands. Tears flow toward the nasal side of the eye and drain into the lacrimal sac in the area between the eye and the side of the nose

Higher Order Aberration - The lower order aberrations are familiar names to most of us: myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, and they’re refractive errors. The higher order aberrations are irregularities of the eye that are not refractive. Sixty-four have been detected and measured so far, using wavefront technology. They’re not treatable with traditional LASIK procedures, glasses or contact lenses, but can be diagnosed and treated by wavefront-guided LASIK. Any given eye usually has more than one, which interact, producing symptoms. That means the aberrations can’t necessarily be established based on symptoms. They come into play at night, or in low lighting conditions. Some examples are:( DALLAS LASIK - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE)

DR. BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY = YAG Laser - YAG is an acronym for neodymium Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet, which is the material used to create this laser. It’s a short pulsed and high-energy infrared light with a wavelength of 1064 nm. It’s used after cataract surgery to vaporize tissue. The crystalline lens is inside a capsular bag, which holds it in place. Cataract surgery fragments and removes the clouded lens but not the bag. Afterwards, many patients develop clouding in that bag tissue. The YAG laser vaporizes it in a post-operative out-patient procedure.

Eye Motility Exam - An eye motility exam is performed on patients to examine if their eye's muscles or nerve supply have any problems. Having the patient focus on a target like the doctor's finger, while they move it in a large "H" is usually how this exam is performed.

Glare - scatter from bright light that decreases vision

Dry Eye is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears to keep the eye wet and comfortable. Common symptoms of dry eye include feelings of stinging, burning, or scratchiness of the eyes.( DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY)

Dr. William A. Boothe = Lens - The crystalline lens, inside the eye, which refracts (bends) light rays as they pass through the eye to the retina. It’s fully transparent and is convex on both sides (curves outwards). It’s located between the iris, the colored part of the eye, and the vitreous humor, the fluid which fills the main part of the eye’s interior. It’s the second part of the eye to refract light rays, the first being the cornea, which does about 65% of the refraction necessary for clear vision. The lens can change its shape to accommodate light rays coming from near or far distances, and these changes in shape are controlled by tiny muscles attached to each end of the lens.

Pre-operative procedures for this process include extensive examination of each eye to determine if they are suitable. As in all eye surgeries, the eyes are first numbed with anesthetic drops and an eyelid holder is placed to prevent blinking. A small incision is made in the cornea and a centering guide is placed on the surface. Using the centering guide, two micro-sized tunnels are made in the periphery of the cornea and the INTAC inserts are placed. The opening is closed up and antibiotic drops maybe applied. Improvement in vision should be noticed immediately but some people require a few days.

Eye Floaters, also known as vitreous floaters or eye spots. They are tiny specks, circles, or thread-like clouds that appear in your field of vision. To people who have looked under a microscope at microscopic cells, eye floaters may seem similar in appearance. Eye floaters can usually bee seen when looking at plain, light colored backgrounds.

Pink eye medication can be a mix of prescribed and over the counter medicines. For bacterial infections, a doctor must prescribe pink eye antibiotic to attack the bacteria. This medication can be delivered in varieties like eye drops or ointments that are applied to the eyes for a few days. Pink eye caused by allergies can be solved with allergy eye drops like Patanol. Patanol is one solution that has been proven to be effective in preventing pink eye caused by allergies with just 2 drops a day. It is safe according to the manufacturer for kids over the age of three. Other medication with antihistamines maybe recommended by a physician which can include anything from liquid to pill state. Another Pink eye medication is Similasan Allergy Eye Relief eye drops. These OTC medications may not be as impressive but provide some relief. Similasan also has a pink eye relief eye drops for viral conjunctivitis. Other eye drop companies also manufacture similar eye drops that alleviate Viral Pink eye. These over the counter medications are all that is required for most cases of viral pink eye as the virus just needs to run its course and pink eye medication is used just for soothing symptoms. For relieving discharge, warm compresses are great for removing the sticky residue as well as the crusty, dried portions around the eyes. For persistent problems it is best to consult your eye care professional.( DR BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK)

DR WILLIAM BOOTHE = Uveitis: Uveitis is an inflammation of the eye structures in the uveal tract (the iris and other structures within the eye to which the iris attaches). Uveitis may occur without an obvious cause or may be due to trauma or an inflammatory disease in other parts of the body. Symptoms and signs of uveitis include eye pain, tearing, light sensitivity, and visual blurring.

Diopter - (di-AHP-tur) The unit of measurement for a lens. Positive diopter numbers indicate the lens is convex (curving outwards) and negative numbers indicate it’s concave. A one-diopter lens will bend straight light rays to focus them one meter away from itself. A two-diopter lens will bend them to focus only a half-meter from itself. A lens with any minus number doesn’t focus the light rays, but scatters them.

A second group of chemical decongestants are the imidazoles (naphazoline, tetrahydrozoline, and oxymetazoline). Imidazoles are longer acting than phenylephrine and have fewer side effects, including rebound congestion. Caution still is recommended with imidazoles because of the potential for an increase in blood pressure. Of the three imidazoles, oxymetazoline generally appears to exhibit the least side effects. Naphazoline may dilate pupils more in people with lightly pigmented (blue or green) eyes.
